Summer Pool Safety Tips

Summer Pool Safety Tips

Accidental drownings are a tragic reality here in Southern California. These deaths are 100% preventable.

The Azusa Police Department wants to make sure you are having a fun and safe summer by informing the community of the ABCD’s of water safety, as it relates to pools.

Never leave a child unattended near or in the a body of water. Drownings can happen quickly and quietly making it one of the leading cause of injury-related death among children between the ages of one and four. This summer we encourage you to assign a designated pool watcher because it only takes a few seconds for a tragedy to take place.

B - Barriers

A successful pool or spa barrier will prevent a child from getting access into the water or alert an adult. Consider installing a four-foot fence with self-closing and self-latching gates or placing alarms on doors and windows that face a pool or spa.

C - Classes

Learn and practice water skills. Enroll a child in swimming lessons at a local community pool. Not only is it great exercise but it also teaches them respect for the water. Parents should attend a CPR class because emergencies do occur, and it could save someone's life.

D - Devices

Create a safe pool environment by being prepared before an emergency occurs. Know where rescue equipment is located and keep a phone nearby to call 9-1-1 during an emergency. If a child isn't comfortable swimming, be sure to have them wear a life jacket or some other flotation device to create confidence and prevent drownings.
