Azusa Police Arrest Armed Man for Assault

On February 6, 2017 at about 4:24 AM, Azusa Police Officers responded to an apartment complex on the 1200 block of N. San Gabriel Avenue on a report of a possible transient who was asleep near the breezeway of the complex.Upon arrival, Officers located Jorge Herrera, a 32 year old Azusa resident, sleeping to the front of one of the apartments. Officers spoke to the resident of that particular unit to find out if Herrera belonged there. They spoke to Herrera's estranged spouse who advised the Officers that Herrera did not live there and that he had actually pointed a gun at her earlier in the evening during an argument. During that time, Herrera began to move and a portion of a handgun was seen in his left front jacket pocket. Officers attempted to remove the handgun from Herrera's possession. After a brief physical struggle, they were able to remove the handgun and place Herrera into custody. The handgun was found to be a replica airsoft gun and was the same gun he used to assault his wife. Herrera was arrested, and booked for assault with a deadly weapon, domestic violence, violation of a domestic violence order, brandishing a replica firearm, and drug possession. He is currently being held at the Los Angeles County jail and his bail is set at $50,000. He is scheduled to be arraigned on February 8, 2017.
