Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Enforcement Detail

Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Enforcement Detail

The Azusa Police Department will be conducting a pedestrian and bicycle safety enforcement detail on March 13, 2017, between 7 am and 1 pm. Officers from the department's traffic bureau will be at various locations throughout the city monitoring crosswalks and intersections to ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.

We want to remind everyone to always use caution and a heightened sense of awareness whenever approaching crosswalks, as the safety of pedestrians is of the utmost importance. When you see a pedestrian lawfully in a crosswalk, you are required to yield the right of way to the pedestrian. This means bringing your vehicle to a complete stop behind the marked crosswalk lines, and remain stopped, until the pedestrian is no longer close enough to constitute a safety hazard in the crosswalk.

It is just as important that pedestrians abide by the rules of the road as well. You have a duty to enter a crosswalk only when it is safe to do so. You must yield the right of way to vehicles that are close enough to constitute a safety risk to you, should you enter a crosswalk. Remember to use the pedestrian walk/don't walk signals.

Three Feet For Safety Law:   Motorists are required to leave at least a 3 foot gap between their vehicle and a bicyclist, when passing a bicyclist on a roadway. In the event there is not enough space for you to do so, and you can not safely or legally pass the cyclist, you must remain behind the cyclist until it is safe to proceed into another lane or pass by.

Cyclists And Vehicle Codes:   Cyclists are required to follow the laws of the road specified in the vehicle code. This means stopping at stop signs and red light traffic signals, riding with the flow of traffic, and wearing a helmet at all times for those under 18 years of age. However, it's a good idea for anyone riding a bicycle to wear a helmet.

Be A Model For Your Children:   By demonstrating good driving habits, as well as following the laws as it pertains to pedestrians and cyclists, you are setting a great example for your children, as well as others around you. This enforcement detail has been made possible through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
