Azusa Police Investigate an Attempted Kidnapping and Sexual Assault

On Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at about 1531 hours, the Azusa Police Department investigated an attempt kidnapping and sexual assault which occurred in the 1100 block of E. Alosta Avenue.

At the time of the incident, the female victim was walking to her apartment. As she entered the carport area of the apartment complex, a male suspect approached her from behind and grabbed her. The suspect was able to lift her off the ground and made an attempt to carry her away. As the victim struggled, the suspect released her, and ran from the scene. The victim was sexually assaulted during this crime.

Officers searched the area for the suspect, but he was not located. The suspect is described as a male Hispanic adult, approximately 5'5'' tall, late teens to early 20's, wearing dark clothing and a baseball style hat.

The Azusa Police Department is aware that there was a similar incident which occurred at California State University, Northridge at about the same time. At this point of the investigation, we do not believe these crimes are connected.

Safety Tips

Regardless of whether you are a male or female, we would like to recommend the following tips to pedestrians as they are walking in public places:

  • Do not use your portable electronics while walking. You can walk into objects, other pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles, and your attention is not focused on walking.
  • Be cognizant of your surroundings. Keep your head "on a swivel," which means look around you, not just in front of you.
  • If you hear someone or something approaching you from behind, turn around to see what is behind or approaching you.
  • Walk with a friend or family member, in a well-lit area.
  • Keep purses and backpacks zipped, closed, and near your body.
  • In the event you are attacked, make plenty of noise and fight off your attacker.
  • Remember as much as possible about the suspect and his or her vehicle as you can.
  • Call 911 FIRST. Do not call a friend, family member or post on social media what happened. We need to start responding as quickly as possible to help you and search for the suspect.
