Drowning in San Gabriel Riverbed

Drowning in San Gabriel Riverbed

On July 12th, 2017, at about 5:34 PM, Azusa Police Officers were dispatched to a possible drowning in the riverbed area along the 1900 block of N San Gabriel Canyon Road. As Officers were arriving, several friends of the drowning victim had pulled the victim onto the shore and were attempting to administer CPR.

Azusa Police Officers, along with LA County Fire paramedics took over medical aid and resumed CPR and other life saving efforts. The victim was airlifted to Huntington Memorial Hospital by helicopter and was ultimately pronounced dead by medical personnel. The victim's name is not yet being released, however, he is identified as a 28 year old Azusa resident.

Detectives from the Azusa Police Department responded to investigate the incident. Several friends of the victim and an independent witness were interviewed and there does not appear to be any type of foul play involved. The victim appeared to have been swimming in the riverbed area, adjacent to a spillway, and ultimately went underwater for some time and floated to the surface unconscious. Friends of the victim then pulled him to shore.

The Los Angeles County Coroner will be investigating further to determine the exact cause of death.

Please use extreme caution when approaching any type of water zones along the riverbed as the areas may be slippery and the currents may be hazardous. These areas are prohibited to the public and should not be entered.
